The blade fits in a hand-held hacksaw. The pins on either end are tensioned in the hacksaw before use. The blades can be used to cut metals or plastics. The blade can be mounted with the teeth facing towards or away from the handle, resulting in cutting action on either the push or pull stroke.

Carpenter pencils are easier to grip than standard pencils, because they have a larger surface area. The non-round core allows thick or thin lines to be drawn by rotating the pencil. Thin lines are required for precision markings and thick markings are needed to mark on rough surfaces
